Workbench Design & Manufacture

The physical workstation is an integral part of the solution.

We can design and manufacture bespoke smart workbenches around the operator, task, equipment and production environment. This can include mechanical structures, adjustable work surfaces, lighting, guarding, electrical systems, control equipment and mounting for integrated technologies.

The workstation can be engineered around client standards together with applicable legislation, directives and technical requirements.

Where required, we can take responsibility for the complete package, including the relevant conformity assessment and delivery as a CE or UKCA marked assembly.

For existing production environments, we can also integrate technology into off the shelf workstations or retrofit existing benches where retaining current equipment provides the best solution.

Projection and augmented reality can highlight components, assembly positions, inspection areas, test points or individual process steps, helping operators interpret instructions without repeatedly moving between the product and a separate screen.

Depending on the application, guidance can be delivered through projectors, screens, tablets or other augmented reality technologies.

The workstation can identify each inspection or control point, guide the operator to the correct location and capture results against the relevant part, process or work order.

FAIRFIELDS has already helped take smart workbench technology from prototype into live aerospace production.

Working on a collaborative workbench programme for BAE Systems, the solution brought together SAP issued digital work instructions, personalised workstation settings, 3D optical projection and machine vision verification.

A broker based architecture allowed each workstation to access the information required for the task without storing complete product data locally, supporting security and configuration control within the production environment.

The technology has since been deployed across more than 20 workstations at six facilities, supporting more efficient production, improved right first time quality and reduced learning curves when new products are introduced.
