Energy
Energy systems must operate safely and reliably, often across distributed assets and ageing infrastructure. FAIRFIELDS works with clients to design, upgrade and support these systems, bringing together engineering, control and digital expertise into a single, integrated approach.
Our experience spans small-scale generation and local energy schemes through to large, complex facilities, including CHP plants, district heating schemes, energy from waste incineration and combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) installations. We also support critical backup and resilience systems, such as fuel storage and distribution for data centre generation. We support both new projects and existing operations, from integrating new plant and equipment to upgrading and extending the life of existing systems across generation, distribution and wider balance of plant.
This includes supporting auxiliary and supporting systems such as water treatment, wash skids, HVAC and gas compression, ensuring they are integrated and operate effectively as part of the wider facility.
With many assets operating beyond their original design life, there is an increasing need to modernise without disrupting operations. Our multidisciplinary teams work closely with clients to manage this, improving system reliability, simplifying maintenance and enabling future upgrades in a controlled and practical way.
Control & Automation for Energy Infrastructure
Control systems are central to the safe and coordinated operation of energy infrastructure. FAIRFIELDS designs and implements solutions ranging from standalone PLC systems to fully integrated distributed control systems, tailored to the scale and complexity of the asset.
We specialise in integrating plant and processes into a single control environment, enabling clear visibility, coordinated operation and effective management of distributed systems such as district heating networks and generation assets.
Our approach also focuses on upgrading and migrating legacy systems, improving operability, maintainability and access to system information, while minimising disruption to ongoing operations.
Energy Monitoring
FAIRFIELDS provides energy monitoring solutions that give visibility of how systems and assets are operating.
We collect and present data from across plant and infrastructure, allowing operators to understand energy usage and system performance. These solutions can be integrated into existing control and supervisory systems, or provided as standalone monitoring where required.
This supports better awareness of energy consumption and provides a basis for identifying opportunities for improvement over time.
Cyber Security Across the System Lifecycle
Energy infrastructure relies on the safe and reliable operation of interconnected systems. As these systems become more connected, cyber security plays a critical role in protecting availability and ensuring continued operation.
FAIRFIELDS applies a lifecycle approach to cyber security, considering risk from initial design through to operation and ongoing support. This includes assessing vulnerabilities, implementing appropriate controls and ensuring systems are maintained securely over time.
Our IEC 62443 certified cyber security specialists support the development of secure system architectures, controlled access and the ongoing management of vulnerabilities through activities such as patch management. We also support energy operators in meeting regulatory requirements, including compliance with the Network and Information Systems (NIS) Regulations.
By embedding cyber security into the wider system lifecycle, we help ensure that energy infrastructure remains secure without impacting operational performance.
Lifecycle Support & System Resilience
Energy systems are long-life assets that must remain operational under demanding conditions. FAIRFIELDS supports clients throughout the full lifecycle, from initial design and implementation through to maintenance, upgrade and ongoing support.
Our services include preventative maintenance, system upgrades and obsolescence management, helping to keep systems reliable and fit for purpose as requirements change.
We have long-term experience supporting operational energy infrastructure, including over 20 years maintaining district heating control systems and ongoing support for control systems at multiple CCGT facilities across the UK. This experience enables us to deliver improvements in a controlled way, minimising disruption while maintaining safe and continuous operation.
