Kinetic Architecture

FAIRFIELDS delivers mechanical, hydraulic and control systems for kinetic architecture, enabling complex moving structures to operate safely, reliably and precisely in support of the architect’s vision.

Kinetic architecture introduces movement into buildings, creating structures that must operate safely in close proximity to the public while maintaining precise control and repeatability. These systems combine mechanical drive arrangements, hydraulic actuation and complex control logic, all within constrained architectural spaces and live environments. Failure or poor performance can affect safety, building operation and the integrity of the design.

FAIRFIELDS works alongside clients, designers and main contractors to develop and deliver the systems that bring these structures to life. From early concept stages through to detailed design, installation, commissioning and ongoing support, we help translate architectural intent into practical, buildable and maintainable solutions.

Our multidisciplinary teams integrate mechanical systems, hydraulics, electrical infrastructure and control systems into a single coordinated approach. We understand the importance of working within architectural constraints, coordinating with structural interfaces and maintaining programme certainty on complex builds. Our experience spans automatic actuated escape hatches, moving roofs, façade access systems and mast actuation solutions, drawing on our wider expertise in moving structures and bridge systems.

Across all projects, the focus remains on safe operation, precision and long term reliability, supporting developments where performance and safety are critical .

Integrated Delivery

Kinetic architectural systems require coordination across multiple disciplines and stakeholders. Clear definition of interfaces and responsibilities is essential to ensure systems function as intended.

FAIRFIELDS supports delivery from concept through to commissioning, helping define system requirements and develop practical solutions aligned with the architectural design. Mechanical, hydraulic and control elements are considered together to ensure safe and coordinated operation.

We work within the constraints of live construction environments, planning installation and commissioning activities to align with programme and access requirements while maintaining control of system integrity.

Maintenance and Support

Reliable operation is critical for kinetic architectural systems, particularly in public or high profile environments where downtime can have operational and reputational impact.

FAIRFIELDS provides planned preventative maintenance and responsive support to maintain system performance. This includes inspection of mechanical and hydraulic systems, control system checks and fault diagnosis.

We offer 24,7 callout support and, where possible, remote diagnostics to assist with fault finding. Support also includes obsolescence planning and targeted upgrades to maintain reliability over time .
