FAIRFIELDS delivers multidisciplinary engineering solutions for moving bridges, from feasibility and design through to installation, commissioning and long term support, integrating mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and control systems into safe, reliable and fully coordinated assets.

Moving bridges are critical assets operating in complex, high consequence environments where reliability, safety and availability are essential. Failure to operate when required disrupts both road and river or canal traffic, often with immediate operational, financial and reputational consequences. Robust engineering and long term support are therefore fundamental to maintaining safe and dependable operation.

FAIRFIELDS works across the full lifecycle of moving bridge systems, from inspections, feasibility studies and outline design through to detailed engineering, build, installation and commissioning. This continuity ensures risks are identified early, interfaces are effectively managed and systems are delivered as a complete, integrated solution rather than a collection of individual parts.

Our teams bring together mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, control and instrumentation expertise, enabling us to coordinate the full system, from drive mechanisms and lifting equipment through to control architectures, safety systems and operator interfaces. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that each element performs as part of a single, reliable system in operation.

We have been involved in the delivery, upgrade and ongoing support of over 30 moving bridges across the UK, including iconic structures such as Tower Bridge, London and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. This experience provides a practical understanding of working on live infrastructure, constrained sites and ageing assets, allowing us to develop solutions that are both technically robust and operationally realistic.

Whether delivering new infrastructure, upgrading obsolete systems or extending the life of existing assets, our focus is on reducing risk, improving reliability and ensuring long term maintainability.

A Snapshot

Tower Bridge

All Shapes and Sizes

Moving bridges come in many forms, each with their own operational, mechanical and safety challenges. FAIRFIELDS has extensive experience delivering solutions across a wide range of bridge types, from new installations to the upgrade and replacement of ageing assets.

Our engineers have worked across single and double leaf configurations, supporting multiple bridge types including:

• Bascule bridges
• Swing bridges
• Vertical lifting bridges
• Winched deck and drawbridge systems

These structures are operated using a range of drive and actuation methods, including:

• Electrical actuator driven systems
• Electrical slew drive systems
• Hydraulic slew drive systems
• Hydraulic cylinder operated lifting systems
• Winch and cable operated systems

Each solution is engineered to suit the specific characteristics of the structure and how it is operated in practice. We support bridges at every stage of their lifecycle, from initial design and implementation through to appraisal, modernisation and full system replacement, ensuring long term reliability, maintainability and safe operation.

Integrated Delivery

FAIRFIELDS provides a single, coordinated approach to moving bridge projects, ensuring continuity from concept through to handover and beyond.

At the front end, we support asset owners and contractors with feasibility studies, inspections, option development and outline design. This enables informed decision making, clear scope definition and early identification of technical and operational risks.

As projects progress, our multidisciplinary teams deliver detailed design across mechanical systems, hydraulics, electrical infrastructure and control systems. We coordinate interfaces across all disciplines, ensuring systems are fully integrated and aligned with operational requirements.

Delivery continues through manufacture, installation and commissioning, including factory acceptance testing, site testing and structured handover. Our commissioning teams remain involved through to operational readiness, supporting training and early life operation.

This end to end approach provides accountability, reduces interface risk and ensures systems are delivered as a complete, working solution.

Maintenance and Support

For bridge operators, availability is critical. Unplanned downtime impacts road and waterway traffic, safety and public perception.

FAIRFIELDS provides structured maintenance and support services designed to protect asset performance and extend operational life. This includes planned preventative maintenance, inspections, fault response and 24,7 support, with tailored service agreements aligned to the asset and operating environment.

Where systems allow, we enable secure remote access for diagnostics and support, reducing response times and improving fault resolution, particularly for remote or restricted access sites.

We also support obsolescence management and upgrade planning, helping clients prioritise investment and maintain reliability as systems age.

The result is a more predictable, maintainable asset with reduced risk of failure and improved long term performance.
