OT Asset Discovery: The First Step to a More Secure Industrial Network

OT Asset Discovery: The First Step to a More Secure Industrial Network

Industrial environments are increasingly connected.

PLCs, HMIs, drives, industrial switches, engineering workstations, servers and other control-system assets now communicate across networks that can extend far beyond an individual machine or production line.

That connectivity brings significant operational benefits, but it also introduces new cybersecurity risks.

For organisations starting their OT cybersecurity journey, one of the first questions should be:

Do you actually know everything that is connected to your OT network?

You cannot secure what you cannot see

Industrial networks rarely remain exactly as originally designed.

Machines are added. Production lines change. PLCs and HMIs are replaced. Remote access systems are introduced and new network infrastructure is installed.

Documentation does not always change at the same pace.

Over time, the actual industrial environment can become very different from the drawings, asset registers and architecture diagrams held by the business.

What is OT asset discovery?

OT asset discovery is the process of identifying and documenting the devices and systems within an Operational Technology environment.

This could include PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, drives, industrial switches, engineering workstations, servers, safety controllers, remote access devices, instrumentation and legacy communications.

But effective asset discovery should provide more than a hardware list.

The objective is to understand:

  • what is connected
  • where it is connected
  • what it communicates with
  • what role it performs within the wider system

This information creates a trusted baseline for future engineering and cybersecurity decisions.

Building a clearer picture

Asset discovery can help organisations understand network boundaries, connections into wider OT and IT infrastructure, remote access routes, legacy equipment and areas where existing documentation may be incomplete.

That visibility gives engineering, maintenance, IT and cybersecurity teams a much stronger starting point.

Asset discovery does not secure an industrial network by itself.

But before you can decide what needs protecting, you first need to understand what you have.

Not sure what is connected to your OT network? FAIRFIELDS can help you establish a clearer picture of your existing industrial environment and identify practical next steps.
