Rolling Metal

Furnaces


DC Plasma Arc furnace electrode continuous feed system for Avesta Polarit.
Using Allen Bradley SLC 5/05 Ethernet processor communicating over 2 DeviceNet networks to intelligent MCC incorporating 61 motor starters and 4 variable speed drives.

Annealing Furnace using a novel lift-off hood for Corus.  Burner combustion control utilizing a gas safe-start scheme and full gas air ratio control to achieve stoichiometric combustion; excess air control is used in the cooling process. Temperature heating and cooling profiles are programmed using TCS Tactician T1000, dual redundant network for communication    to  local T100 controllers.

Heat treatment line for the hardening and tempering of small components for various sites. Control of gas burner safe-start; temperature profiles; furnace carbon atmosphere generation; component quench; tempering and material handling.  Furnace line is monitored by two supervisory computer systems which automatically down loads set up information from predefined recipes as different product progress through the furnace.

Heat treatment line for the Hardening, Tempering and shot blasting of clutch plates for Quinton Hazel. Product tracking with dynamic control of heater elements using thyristor burst firing Computer based recipe selection, PLC control and full product treatment records.

Reheat furnace gas burner safe start and regenerative burner control system for   B.S.C. Workington. Fuel economy system by automatic burner turn down, on rolling mill production delays. Zone temperature and turndown controlled by PLC based on predicted mill delay times.

Finishing Processes

Several separate machine control systems using a range of Siemens Plc equipment.  Control systems include:  No’s 2,3,& 6 Reeling Machines; 4 and 9 inch Turning Machines; Schumag Multi saw; Incandescent Furnace control; PBR4 and 9 Reeling machines and bar bundling equipment for Corus Engineering Steels.

Wide strip annealing and softening line drives and control for Avesta. Cleaning brush system, entry and exit system. Networked PLC and SCADA systems.

Coil storage warehouse facility. Full automatic crane positioning systems using ac drives allow storage and retrieval of coils from short and long term stores. PLC control, hoist and crane travel drives and product tracing system.
 

Refining


AOD Argon-Oxygen Decarburization Refining for Acerinox and Commentryenne. System for weighing out and batching up additives and conveying them to the vessel. Control of blow oxygen and refining gases to the vessel. Control of vessel tilt. System configuration includes PLC control, computer monitoring, additive calculations, dc and ac drives for the vessel.

Electric arc furnace carbon and oxygen injection control for Corus. Control of the insertion of the injection lance and the metering of air borne carbon to the furnace.
