Fairfields are experts in designing and building control systems, therefore it is essential that the knowledge its employees possess stays within the company and apprentices are a key component to the company’s success. Apprentices and ex-apprentices currently make up around 30% of the total workforce and Fairfield’s have retained 92% of its apprentices as full time employees over the past 15 years. This is an excellent reflection on how well apprentices value the support and training offered and demonstrates how the apprentices are viewed as a long-term asset to the company. We have regularly worked alongside the Skills Funding Agency to promote apprenticeship nationwide through radio, print and online campaigns.
Fairfield’s offers Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships in electrical engineering and ICT systems engineering. We have developed a quantifiable set of measures for each apprentice to gauge their contributions to the business and an in-house engineer mentor provides on-the-job training and support.
Fairfield Controls was named by Jaguar Land Rover as their ‘Small Employer of the Year’ in 2013 in the National Apprenticeship Awards and was also named as one of the 2013 ‘Top 100 Employers’. In 2014, one of our employee’s, Emma Roberts, was named as the Unilever Higher Apprentice of the Year in the regional final. Emma has been part of Fairfield’s team since August 2012 and she has already made significant contributions to many large scale national iconic projects including; the Wallace and Gromit Thrill-O-Matic Ride (Blackpool Pleasure Beach), the award winning Falkirk Wheel (rotating boat lift), Tower Bridge (London), The Tyrant Boat Ride (London Dungeons) and multiple flood alleviation sites across the UK.
Our typical apprenticeship programme can be tailored to each individuals need and entry level position. Whilst we will always aim to offer a full time and permanent position to every apprentice upon completion of year 3, this is not guaranteed and is dependent on results and the need of each department at the time.
